Dreadlocks FAQ

Dreadlocks are a hairstyle where hair is knotted to form rope-like strands. At Natural Mystik, we use the crochet method to create dreadlocks, although there are various other techniques commonly used such as free-forming and backcombing.
This technique does not require the use of any hair products, is suitable for all hair types, and creates instant, neat and long-lasting dreadlocks with minimal hair damage.
Certainly! At Natural Mystik, we specialize in crafting dreadlocks for all hair types.
We recommend a minimum length of 15-20cm, whether or not you plan to add hair extensions. Shorter hair require extra care, frequent maintenance, and may cause discomfort and potential complications.
The duration varies depending on your hair type and desired outcome, it could take from 30 minutes to 1 hour for an individual strand, to easily over 8-10 hours for a full head of dreadlocks. The installation process can also be divided into separate sessions if preferred.
There may be some loss in hair length, particularly if you want your dreadlocks knotted to the ends. However, our crochet method minimizes length loss compared to other methods like backcombing.

To achieve longer dreadlocks from the beginning, you can choose to add on hair extensions when installing your dreadlocks. We offer both synthetic and human hair extensions in plenty of colours.

Wash them with residue-free shampoo, avoid using hair conditioner or products to prevent build up in the hair, and schedule regular maintenance sessions. After washing, separate the roots to prevent matting, palm roll them from root to tip for uniform growth, and ensure they are always thoroughly dried to prevent odours and mildew/mold growth.
Maintenance sessions are crucial to ensure neat, uniform, and healthy growth of dreadlocks, especially in the early stages. For new dreadlocks, we recommend maintenance every 3-4 weeks in the first few months and every 40-60 days as they mature. Once they've fully matured (typically in 10-20 months depending on hair type), maintenance frequency becomes more flexible.
We offer a range of dreadlock styling options, from trendy braids and elegant up-dos to vibrant hair wraps and other unique accessories.
